The growing challenge: SEND, inclusion, and wellbeing

An estimated one in seven people are neurodivergent, but there is still a significant gap between the support and access to early interventions that individuals need to thrive and the current support systems in place. Highly intelligent, talented, and passionate people are left behind because the systems for support can’t keep up.

This is not just a challenge for educational services; it’s a community problem. The pressures of unmet special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) do not stay within any single service, they move through health, social care, policing, leisure, and the workplace. A child unsupported in their early years of education becomes a young person on a healthcare waiting list and eventually an adult in a workplace setting that wasn’t designed with them in mind.

The challenges every service is facing:

  • Increasing demand for SEND and inclusion support

  • Staff capacity, SEND capability, and resources have surged beyond capacity

  • Rising need for early intervention solutions and support

  • Fragmented services across education, healthcare, and social care

In England:

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) have more than doubled since 2014

1 in 5 young people aged 8-18 have a mental health condition

Only 36% of employers have a neurodiversity policy

Sensory rooms: Integration for inclusion

Sensory rooms have become a staple in many schools. They are designed as calming spaces where children can take a break from sensory overload. The intention is always to support. However, as we enhance our understanding of inclusion, it’s essential to ask: is there a way to support regulation without creating separation?

Understanding sensory processing disorder: A silent struggle

Imagine living in a world where every sound feels like a roar, where the touch of clothing feels like sandpaper on your skin, or where bright lights seem like a constant, unbearable glare. This is the reality for individuals with SPD, a condition that remains largely misunderstood and

under-recognised.

The lifelong impact of sensory

processing disorder: From childhood to adulthood

Explore the deeper impacts of SPD on individuals as they transition from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Understanding the statistics and long-term effects can help in creating more effective support systems and raising awareness about this often-overlooked condition.
