The Importance of Safe Spaces for Neurodiverse Children: A Call to Action

Updated: Oct 8

Understanding the Challenges Faced by Neurodiverse Families

We sat in that A&E waiting room for nearly nine hours.

Nine hours of pleading eyes and silent prayers. Nine hours of trying to soothe my autistic child in a space that was anything but soothing. When we were finally called to triage, it wasn’t relief that met us; it was sensory chaos.

The lights were blinding. The noise was relentless. The smells were overpowering. The space was shared, divided only by flimsy curtains. It was a battlefield of overstimulation.

My child couldn’t cope. They ran from bed to bed, jumping into other patients’ spaces, desperate to escape the overwhelm. I was shattered—physically, mentally, and emotionally—trying to hold it together, trying to care for them, trying not to fall apart.

This is not a story from years ago. This is now. This is Ireland today.

The Need for Change

We talk about progress. We celebrate inclusion. But the truth is, we are still failing our neurodiverse children and their families in the most critical moments. How can any government expect a child with complex sensory needs, and a parent on the edge, to endure this kind of environment? Where is the safe space to regulate? Where is the dignity? Where is the care?

The Role of Cubbie in Transforming Experiences

This is why Cubbie matters. Cubbie was born in Co. Mayo, designed by an Irish father of two autistic daughters who knew this pain first-hand. It’s not just technology; it’s a lifeline. A personalised sensory pod that offers calm, control, and compassion in places where those things are often missing.

At Cubbie, we’re not just innovating. We’re advocating. We’re calling on everyone—parents, educators, healthcare workers, policymakers—to stand with us. To help build a world where no child is left to suffer in silence. Where no parent is forced to choose between care and collapse. A world where diversity is celebrated. Where inclusion is non-negotiable. Where access is a right, not a privilege.

Building a Supportive Community

Creating a supportive community is essential for the well-being of neurodiverse families. We need to foster environments where everyone feels understood and valued. By sharing our experiences, we can raise awareness and encourage others to join our cause.

Sharing Personal Stories

Personal stories are powerful tools for change. They humanise the statistics and bring attention to the real challenges faced by families. When we share our struggles, we invite empathy and understanding. It’s crucial to create platforms where these stories can be told and heard.

Engaging with Policymakers

Engaging with policymakers is another vital step. We must advocate for policies that prioritise the needs of neurodiverse children and their families. This includes funding for sensory-friendly spaces in hospitals, schools, and public areas. By working together, we can influence change at a systemic level.

The Future We Can Create Together

Because no family should have to live this story. Every child deserves better. Let’s make it happen. Together.

In conclusion, the need for safe spaces for neurodiverse children is urgent. We must come together to create environments where they can thrive. By advocating for change and sharing our stories, we can build a brighter future for all families.

Let’s stand united in this mission. Together, we can make a difference.
